The Negroni is one of my favorite cocktails to make all year round. The recipe is simple, the cocktail is easy to make, and it tastes great. I can make a few in one night for myself and my guests with minimal effort.

So reach for your rocks glass (the glass traditionally intended for the cocktail) and get ready to make some Negronis.

History of the Negroni

It all started in Florence, Italy during the 1920s. Count Camillo Negroni walked into the Casoni Cafe, (now the Giacosa Cafe) and told the barman to add gin to his American Highball cocktail (This sounds like the beginning of a bad joke but it’s actually what happened). The barman switches the soda water with gin, the count gets his gin cocktail, and loves it.

The Negroni cocktail recipe gained popularity, and thus, another classic cocktail was born. If you’re interested in other cocktails from the 1920s, check out our 1920s cocktail post here

What Are the Best Ingredients for A Negroni?

This Negroni cocktail recipe is fairly easy, but of course, the better quality the ingredients, the better tasting your Negroni will be. We recommend using Fords Gin or Tanqueray to make your Negroni. Also, using Martini and Rossi Sweet Vermouth may give you a different flavor profile than if you use Cocchi Vermouth di Torino.

Notes

  • On the palette, the Negroni can have a bit of a bitter aftertaste on the tongue that goes away quite quickly, but that taste is supposed to be there and is what makes the Negroni so distinctive.

Variations on the Negroni

The Negroni cocktail can also be stirred directly in your Rock glass, but there are other factors that might make it even better. Check out this video to learn the three different versions of the Negroni cocktail to make with three different levels of expertise.
