Abbey Cocktail Recipe & Ingredients

Did you know the Abbey cocktail inspired the famous Abbey Road album by the Beatles? Well, that was a bold-faced lie. Still, it's a great drink!

Did you know that the Abbey cocktail actually inspired the famous Abbey Road album by the Beatles? Well, that was a bold-faced lie. The Abbey actually first appeared in the Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock written in 1930.

Open up any book filled with cocktail recipes and you’ll probably find the Abbey cocktail as the first one on the list (this is assuming that the author had the decency to put it in alphabetical order). The Abbey cocktail is another one of those fairly straightforward and easy cocktails to make at home if you have the right ingredients.

What is an Abbey Cocktail?

The Abbey is a delightfully balanced gin-based cocktail with the perfect portions of orange juice and LilletBlanc, and bitters. It’s refreshing, easy to make, and it’s ideal for those hot summer days.

History of the Abbey Cocktail?

Despite being the first entry in Harry Craddock’s “Savoy Cocktail Book”, the Abbey does not have much history behind it.

What are the best spirits and ingrediants for anAbbey?

You will want a gin that complements the rest of the ingredients well. You can use a standard dry gin but try experimenting with gins that offer an interesting smell and flavor profile. Pomp and Whimsy, Aviation American, and Hendricks gin offer exceptional natural fruit and botanical notes that add extra synergy to the Abbey cocktail.

You can use any orange bitters to add flavor to the Abbey cocktail, but I personally enjoy using the Hella orange bitters. It’s affordable and usually comes in a variety pack with other different Hella bitters that come in handy for other boozy occasions.

Remember to always have fresh fruit when making juices for your cocktails, as well as your garnish. If you’re wondering which oranges you should use for your zest coin, we recommend using thick-skinned navel oranges.
