The Salty Dog is a twist on the Greyhound, which is made with gin and grapefruit juice. Harry Craddock is thought to have invented the Greyhound, which was first featured in his book ‘The Savoy Cocktail Book’ in the 1930s. A pinch of salt was added somewhere in the 1950s, and the Salty Dog was born. What Are the Best Spirits for A Salty Dog?

With only two components, there’s no room for sloppy vodka or gin. This is especially true since there are no sugars added to mask away the flavor. Therefore we recommend using high-quality vodka or gin like Grey Goose or Hendricks. The same is true for the juice. Fresh juice always beats canned. As far as salt, I recommend a kosher salt or something that’s a little more coarse. Table salt is not fitting for cocktails.

Ingredients

  • 1.50 Ounces Blue Shark Vodka

  • 1.50 Ounces Vodka

  • 4 Ounces Fresh Grapefruit juice

  • Lemon or Lime wedge for frosting the glass

  • Kosher or sea salt for frosting the glass

Directions

  • Frost the rim of the glass with lemon or lime and salt.
  • Fill the glass with ice and build the drink. Stir and serve.
  • Stir and serve.
