If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city, the Algonquin cocktail might be the drink for you.

What is an Algonquin?

The Algonquin cocktail is a tropical whiskey martini. It contains rye whiskey, dry vermouth, and pineapple juice, making it a fantastic summer cocktail.

History of the Algonquin?

Like many classic cocktails, we don’t know when or who invented them. But we do know it was named after the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. The Manhattan hotel was a “dry” hotel long before Prohibition. The cocktail may have originated before or after the 1930s. Either way, this is considered one of the great traditional cocktails. Apart from the historic hotel, information on the Algonquin cocktail still remains a mystery.

It’s worth noting that its name is a bit of a misnomer since the Algonquin is a reference to the island of manhattan, which has little to do with the tropics.

What Glass is an Algonquin served in?

The Algonquin is typically served in a coupe or martini glass. It may be served for dinner or for a relaxing afternoon on the patio.

What are the best spirits and ingredients for an Algonquin

Bulleit Bourbon rye will certainly work for this one. However, if you can get your hands on a bottle of Hudson rye whiskey, I’d go for that one, just to keep the spirit of New York within the drink.

Traditionalists who prefer a drier cocktail use unsweetened pineapple juice. In some recipes, pineapple syrup is used instead of juice. Using high-quality syrup is an excellent way to make a velvety Algonquin stirred drink.

An orange squeeze also adds to the flavor and overall acidity. Consider a light squeeze to add some zing, freshness, and bring out the best in both rye and pineapple.

Ingredients

  • .50 ounces Rye Whiskey

  • .75 ounces Dry Vermouth

  • .75 ounce Pineapple juice

  • Bordeaux cherry & pineapple wedge for garnish

Directions

  • Shake all ingredients (except the garnish) with ice.
  • Strain into a small coupe or cocktail glass.
  • Garnish with a pineapple wedge and cherry.

Notes

  • You might want to try stirring instead of shaking it. Shaking pineapple juice makes a lot of excess foam, which some people dislike. It settles after a few minutes.
  • For best results, use an electric juicer or mash up some pineapple pieces before adding the other ingredients.
